Solomon Withey
(Lot 7, Block 4)

Solomon Withey was born in Vermont. He served as town marshal for a short time. In fact, he was marshal during the first murder trial in Grand Rapids. A man had been charged with killing an Indian "squaw". The convicted man was to be hanged, but a legislative act abolishing the death penalty commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
