Albert Baxter
(Lot 5, Block 4)

Albert Baxter was an early historian of the city. Baxter was raised in New England, the oldest of seven brothers and six sisters. His family was very poor, and Baxter taught school before coming to Michigan in 1846. In 1849 he married Elvira Guild (one of Joel Guild’s daughters). A daughter was born to the Baxters died very young. As you can see from her grave marker she was less than a year old. Elvira died while visiting family in Vermont and Albert returned her body to Grand Rapids for burial in the family plot.
